About This Destination
Jozani
Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is the green heart of Zanzibar — a forest reserve that survived the island's centuries of spice farming and that now protects some of its last ancient woodland. It is also the only place on earth where the Zanzibar red colobus monkey lives in the wild.
The colobus here are habituated to human presence and completely unafraid — walking among them in the forest is an extraordinary experience, and entirely unlike any monkey encounter in mainland Tanzania. With their vivid red backs, white faces, and pendulous bellies, they are among the world's most distinctive primates.
Beyond the colobus, Jozani offers a forest walk through fig and mango woodland, a mangrove boardwalk that takes you over Chwaka Bay on raised walkways, and over 50 bird species including the rare Zanzibar sunbird.
