About This Destination
Mount Meru
Mount Meru rises sharply from the savanna floor of Arusha National Park, its perfect volcanic cone draped in montane forest, heathland, and sheer cliff on the dramatic inner crater wall. At 4,566 meters, it is Africa's fifth highest mountain, yet it remains vastly undertrekked compared to its famous neighbor—which means you share the trail with almost nobody.
The four-day ascent climbs through five distinct ecological zones: savanna grassland where buffalo graze, montane forest alive with black-and-white colobus monkeys, giant heathland of lobelia and senecio, moorland, and finally an exposed rocky ridge to Socialist Peak. At the summit, Kilimanjaro fills the entire eastern horizon — a view that stops trekkers in their tracks every time.
Because the trek is run entirely within Arusha National Park, you are always accompanied by an armed ranger — a unique feature that makes night-time summit pushes feel genuinely safe. Mount Meru is also the classic Kilimanjaro acclimatisation route: complete the trek in week one, then head for Uhuru Peak the following week with altitude already banked.
Highlights
Sample Itinerary
Africa's fifth highest summit — forest, crater wall, and Kilimanjaro on the horizon.
Momela Gate → Miriakamba Hut (2,514 m)
Trek through open savanna where buffalo graze. The forest thickens as you gain altitude — black-and-white colobus monkeys leap through the canopy above. Arrive at Miriakamba Hut as the first views of Kilimanjaro appear to the east.
Miriakamba → Saddle Hut (3,570 m)
The forest gives way to giant heathland — towering lobelias and senecios beside the trail. The dramatic Ash Cone, an inner volcanic remnant, comes into view. With every metre gained, Kilimanjaro grows larger across the Rift Valley.
Summit Night → Little Meru → Socialist Peak (4,566 m) → Descent
Midnight start on a narrow exposed ridge, your armed ranger ahead in the dark. The summit at dawn: Kilimanjaro fills the entire horizon above a sea of cloud. Descend back to Miriakamba the same day — a long but unforgettable descent.
Miriakamba → Momela Gate → Arusha
A final descent through the montane forest, now familiar and full of detail you missed on day one. Buffalo again in the clearing. Return to Arusha by early afternoon.
