About This Destination

Tarangire

Tarangire is the gem that experienced safari-goers return to again and again, drawn by its ancient atmosphere, remarkable elephant concentrations, and the sense that you have the landscape largely to yourself.

The Tarangire River acts as a dry-season magnet, drawing wildlife from a vast ecosystem every June through October. Elephant herds of 200 or more gather along the banks — some of the largest herds you'll encounter anywhere in Africa. The characteristic landscape of giant baobab trees, hundreds or even thousands of years old, gives Tarangire a primordial quality unlike anywhere else in Tanzania.

The park is also exceptional for tree-climbing lions, large prides seen resting in the branches of fever trees. Bird diversity is extraordinary — over 550 recorded species — making it a paradise for ornithologists.
