Founded in Arusha, 2020
Our Story
A single Land Cruiser. Two returning clients. A belief that wilderness should feel wild.
How We Got Here
Five years building our vision
Where it began
Amos Thomas Mshana and his co-founder had spent years in Tanzania's safari industry — guiding, planning, watching — when they decided the experience could be done better. Smaller groups. More intimate access. Camps that felt like part of the landscape rather than visitors to it. Africa Gateway launched from Arusha with a conviction that wilderness should feel wild, not managed.
Growing with purpose
Amina joined from the hotel industry and built the behind-the-scenes infrastructure: supplier relationships, camp partnerships, a booking process that didn't feel like a transaction. The team grew to four guides, each selected for knowledge over certification. Word of mouth had us turning people away by December.
Adding the mountain
David brought Kilimanjaro into the portfolio. His family had run portering operations for two generations; his contribution was rigour — proper altitude protocols, medical oxygen carried on every climb, day-count acclimatisation routes only. The summit success rate hit 94% in year one.
Still the same
Five years on, we operate across Tanzania's full circuit, from Ruaha to Zanzibar. The team is larger. The vehicles are newer. The conviction hasn't moved: small groups, private guides, camps that belong to the landscape. Not a single journey we sell is run from a template.
What We Stand For
How we operate
Conservation First
Every safari we run contributes directly to community-run wildlife conservancies. We don't just operate in Tanzania — we invest in its future.
Local at Heart
Our guides were born here. They learned from their fathers, who learned from theirs. That knowledge — of animal behaviour, of seasonal movement, of hidden places — cannot be taught in a classroom.
Uncompromising Quality
Small groups, private vehicles, meticulously chosen camps. We work with lodges that share our values and will not compromise on the guest experience.
Authentic Connection
We arrange genuine exchanges — not staged cultural shows. Maasai elders who invite you in. Farmers who explain the complex coexistence of wildlife and agriculture.
The People
Meet the team
Co-founder, 2020
Amos Thomas Mshana
Co-founder & Managing Director
Amos co-founded Africa Gateway Safaris in 2020 with a clear conviction: that travellers deserved something more personal than the conventional lodge circuit. Born and raised in Arusha, he brings deep knowledge of Tanzania's ecosystems alongside the local relationships — with camps, guides, and communities — that define every journey we craft.
12 years in safari operations
Amina Mwangi
Head of Experiences
Amina joined in 2012 and has designed hundreds of itineraries. Her instinct for pairing the right camp to the right traveller — and the right season to the right park — is the operational backbone of every journey we sell.
400+ Kilimanjaro summits
David Kimaro
Mountain Operations Director
A Chagga from the slopes of Kilimanjaro, David has reached Uhuru Point more than 400 times. His acute understanding of altitude medicine and acclimatisation pacing gives our trekkers the best summit success rate on the mountain.
