About This Destination

Mahale

Mahale Mountains National Park occupies a remote peninsula on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, where the Mahale mountains rise to 2,462 metres directly from the lake shore. The journey here — a combination of flights to Kigoma and a boat crossing on Africa's deepest lake — deposits you in one of the continent's most extraordinary settings.

The main event is the M-group chimpanzees: a large, long-habituated community that researchers have been studying since the 1960s. Encounters in the forest are intimate and unhurried — you may spend an hour or more with a group as they feed, groom, and play in the canopy above. No vehicles are involved; this is a pure walking experience.

Between chimp treks, the clear waters of Lake Tanganyika — filled with hundreds of endemic cichlid fish species and visibility of up to 20 metres — offer world-class snorkelling and kayaking that you'll find nowhere else in the world.

Sample Itinerary

The world's most beautiful chimpanzee experience — lake, forest, and mountains.

DAY 01

Kigoma → Mahale by Boat

Fly to Kigoma and board a boat for the 4-hour journey south along Lake Tanganyika's shore. Arrive at the camp on the beach as the mountains rise directly behind.

DAY 02

First Chimpanzee Trek

Early morning forest trek to locate the M-group. The chimps are larger here than at Gombe and the forest setting — mountain slopes above a lake — is one of Africa's most dramatic.

DAY 03

Full Day Trek & Snorkelling

Longer trek deep into the forest where the chimps spend the night. Return to camp for afternoon snorkelling in Tanganyika's clear water — fish species found nowhere else on earth.

DAY 04

Kayaking & Forest Walk

Morning kayak along the shore with fish eagles overhead. Afternoon forest walk with a botanist guide — many trees in Mahale have no English names, only Kiswahili ones.

DAY 05

Final Trek & Return Journey

Dawn trek for a final hour with the chimps. Boat back to Kigoma in the afternoon.

From $2,800 pp
