About This Destination
Kigosi
Kigosi National Park is among Tanzania's largest protected areas and one of the most rarely visited. It occupies a remote position in western Tanzania, protecting vast tracts of miombo woodland and the seasonal floodplains of the Malagarasi River system.
The Malagarasi River is one of Africa's oldest rivers, pre-dating Lake Tanganyika itself, and its floodplains support extraordinary concentrations of hippos during the dry season. Lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, wild dogs, and the uncommon sable and roan antelope complete the mammal list.
Kigosi forms part of a chain of western parks — Ugalla, Kigosi, Moyowosi — that together protect the largest freshwater wetland system in Africa after the Sudd. The Shoebill Stork is sometimes recorded here, making it one of very few Tanzanian locations for this extraordinary bird.
